The rain we’ve had near the headwaters of the Whanganui River over the weekend has made the awa fuller than usual, but the water level begun dropping overnight and will continue to do so following high tide this morning. As a precaution, the Kowhai Park gates will be shut until around 10.00am today as the water is lapping onto the road. Whanganui District Council and Horizons teams as well the rural fire people from Fire and Emergency New Zealand kept an eye on the situation overnight.

WHANGANUI: Our duty staff have been monitoring the current weather event, with heavy rainfall elevating river levels in the Whanganui River. The peak is currently passing through Pipiriki. Based on current predictions, the Town Bridge will peak at 10pm tonight. That level is expected to be below the trigger point and therefore the flood barriers at Kowhai Park will not be activated at this time. Our staff will continue to monitor river levels throughout the day, and will advise if anything

EMERGENCY ROADING UPDATE There has been a slip on Whanganui River Road between Ranana and Jerusalem which has blocked and closed the road. Our roading team are working on the slip at the moment. We will also be putting signs up at either sides of the road to inform drivers about the closure. We are hoping to have it fixed by Tuesday, July 25, but should have more information on Monday. As State Highway 4 (the Parapara) is also closed, this will affect traffic travelling between Raetihi/Ohakune
